THE BAND

Dottie employed many musicians over the years from Ray Wix to Tony Toliver.  Here are some of those great players.  I don't have names for some of the members, so if you know who they are, please let me know so I can give them credit.  Thanks!

The Heartaches (formed May 1966):

Not only did the Heartaches back up Dottie on the road, they also backed her up on the RCA album The Sound Of Country Music.  The Heartaches also recorded an album for RCA's budget label, Camden, called Wichita Lineman.  Dottie's husband, Bill,  was the band leader and played steel guitar.

(Back row) Jimmy Johnson (guitar), Bill West (steel), and Willie Remsen (Piano)
(Front row) Dottie,
Dave Lee (Bass), Terry Wells (Drums)

Cross Country (formed around 1972):

Cross Country was Dottie's band from 1972 - 1979.  Steve Wariner was Dottie's bass player in this group.

(Left to Right) - Terry Ryan (Guitar), Rudy Osborne (Steel), Bucky Barrett (Guitar), Steve Wariner (Bass), and Byron Metcalf (Drums)

Steve Wariner went on to become a top recording artist and Bucky Barrett is a world-renowned guitar player.  He has backed up several stars such as Roy Orbison, Ray Charles, Neil Young and Charlie Daniels.

Cross Country (some of the 1977-1979 lineup)

(Left to Right):
Dottie, Byron Metcalf (Drums), Sandy Clark (Acoustic & Rhythm Guitar), Mickey Basil (Keyboard & Synthesizer), Ken Harvey (Lead Guitar), Mike Wilson (Bass), Terry Crisp (Steel Guitar)

Terry Crisp has played steel for many great artists over the years including Ricky Skaggs, Gene Watson, and Reba McEntire.  He is currently playing steel for Joe Nichols.

Byron Metcalf, Ph.d, MD,  is still playing drums and recording his own CD's.  He has been experimenting with the use of drums, percussion, and other sounds to induce altered states of consciousness in both ceremonial and therapeutic contexts.

1980 - ?

(Back Row L to R): Kenny Penny (Lead Guitar), Nanette Bohannon (Vocals), Mike Wilson (Bass), Vicky Carrico (Vocals), Ty Corbett (Drums)

(Front Row L to R):
Mickey Basil (Keyboards), Russ Simpson (Synthesizers), Bobby Whitton
(Rhythm Guitar)

Pianist Mickey Basil and bass player Mike Wilson are the only two members from Dottie's previous band.

1987 - 1991

Tony Toliver
(piano)

Tony was working at the Hall of Fame motel in Nashville when Dottie met him.  She offered him and job on the spot and he wouldn't take it unless the band was hired too.  So she hired the band and they backed her up for the next four-and-a-half years.

Like others before him, Tony learned a lot from Dottie and, after her death, got a record deal with Capitol Records.  Tony Toliver was released in 1991 and Half Saint Half Sinner was released in 1996 on Rising Tide records.
