"He's the Master of Country Soul" ~ Dottie on Don Gibson

In 1968, Dottie teamed up with label mate Don Gibson for an album of duets called Rings Of Gold * Dottie & Don

Don was one of country music's premier singer/songwriters in the 50's and 60's; writing such hits as Sweet Dreams (Of You), I Can't Stop Loving You, Oh Lonesome Me, and Just One Time.  He had chart success with other writers' songs: Woman (Sensuous Woman), Country Green, and Touch The Morning.

Don was the second of three artists Dottie recorded with on RCA records.

Three singles were released off their album; Rings Of Gold, Sweet Memories, and 'Til I Can't Take It Anymore.  Rings  was their biggest single - climbing to #2 on Billboard's Country & Western chart in late March of 1969.  The flip side was a song Dottie wrote called Final Examination.

Dottie and Don were nominated for a Grammy in 1969 for best Country & Western Vocal Duo or Group.  They were also noticed by the Country Music Association in 1969 and 1970 for Vocal Group of the year.

In 1970, they released Don's There's A Story (Goin' Round).  Story  was released as a single only and not part of the duet album.  It would be later included on Don's Famous Country Music Makers album from 1976 and Dottie's The Essential Dottie West.  Story peaked at #7 late February in 1970.

Dottie remembered being in the studio with Don...

"Oh, this was such a thrill to sing with this man.  I loved singing with Don Gibson, let me tell you.  It's one of the highlights of my life.  He's one of the best singers, especially on a country song.

"One thing I remember about those sessions is that I kept blowing my takes.  I am such a fan of Don's that as soon as he'd start humming or whistling - he whistles with as much soul as most people sing with.  And he'd start doing that and I'd forget where I was - as far as coming back in on my part.  I'm standing there just listening to him.  It was fun."
